Day four was full and demanding, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, but it was also so good. We started off with morning service at Iglesia Duitama. Mr. Becker preached and several of our students shared from God’s Word or prayed throughout the service. It was bittersweet, seeing the brothers and sisters in Christ we’d gotten to know this week once again but also saying hard goodbyes. We wrote personal notes in Spanish Bibles to each of the members of the rehabilitation program we’d spent so much time with and we are all hoping that we meet again.

So much of this trip has been about flexibility and attentiveness to what God is calling us to, and today that meant spontaneously hanging out with a family from Venezuela that alumni Sam ran into on the way to church. They’ve been walking across Colombia for months now with three children and no place to stay. We brought them to church, took them out to lunch, treated their kids to an afternoon in an arcade so their parents could go on a much needed date, and helped them to rent out a place they will hopefully be able to stay in for the next month. Our students were rock stars, listening attentively to the stories our new friends shared and being the world’s best older siblings without warning. I think we’re all learning that it’s worthwhile changing plans and taking risks to follow God’s heart for the people around us.
