All students should have received their 2023-24 school IDs. If not, contact the ECA office. These IDs are not needed on a daily basis at ECA at this time, so students do not need to wear them or have them with them at all times. Sometimes they can be required on a field trip or service trip, or when we have certain elections, (like for the student advocate/personero). They have the potential to be used for library check-out and registering lunches, but at this time ECA is not using them this way.
Parents should be aware that certain businesses and cultural/recreational sites give discounts when a student ID is presented. Boys in secondary should use their student IDs to show they are studying if they are questioned by police regarding military eligibility.
ECA recommends that parents of elementary students keep the student IDs (or choose a safe place in or on the child’s backpack to secure the ID) and use them as needed or as beneficial. Parents of secondary students should agree upon a plan for their children to keep the student IDs depending on the need and the level of responsibility of each student.
Decree 1860 of 1994, article 2 states that
El carné estudiantil expedido a nombre del menor, será el medio para acreditar la condición de estudiante. Las autoridades podrán exigir su presentación cuando lo consideren pertinente para verificar el cumplimiento de la obligatoriedad constitucional y legal.
We hope this clarifies the confusion that was caused due to an internal communication error that led to a lack of clear instructions when the IDs were sent home, and to comments made in the Parent/Leadership Chat on Mon, Oct 30.
