From March 21 to 28 our group of 7 students and 3 staff will be serving in a small indigenous village in Sierra Nevada. This community of Koguis was separated from the main tribe because they chose to forsake their ancestral beliefs and follow Jesus Christ. It is a village of about 200 inhabitants and 21 families. Because the government does not consider them part of the greater Kogui tribe, they do not receive financial and social support like the main tribe does. They struggle with obtaining resources, especially education.

We will be serving in ministry and education, providing activities and lessons in both the Scriptures and with Spanish, as many speak little to no Spanish. We will use crafts, games, and various other activities to share gospel truths with these relatively new Christians, and help them improve their Spanish as well. We will be working with around 50 children from 1st to 8th grade. Our contacts in the village are Pastor Juan Carlos Gil and Director Silvestre noLavita.

We thank Pre-K and 7th graders for all their support through prayer and encouragement!

Be praying for wisdom for our team, growth within the community and good connections between our team and the people there, and that we can generously share Christ’s love and His Word.

You can also pray for the Kogui village in the following ways.

  1. For the school and its teachers, that God would provide the necessary resources to continue working, since it is the center of evangelism for the Koguis in the Sierra who do not know Jesus.
  2. For encouragement for the community leaders to preach the Word.
  3. For health support for the community since they do not have a promoter to help in this area.
  4. For changed government policies towards this community so they can receive financial support and other resources, as an indigenous community.
