Agrochemicals are chemicals such as fertilizers, hormones, fungicides, insecticides or soil treatment agents that improve the production of crops. We can benefit from agrochemicals because they increase plant and animal crop production, but on the negative side, they can cause environmental damage. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers has led to contamination of ground-water with nitrate which is poisonous to man and animals. Fertilizers can also get to ponds, lakes, and streams, which will increase algal growth causing many fish and other animals to die.
Agrochemicals affect society because these chemicals get into the water and the people that are exposed to this contaminated water will most likely develop diseases such as mutations, cancer, etc. Great amounts of people are exposed to this situation daily and they don’t even know about it. The world-wide deaths and chronic diseases due to pesticide poisoning number about 1 million per year.
We should be more aware of what chemicals are being used in the food and products we buy. We are the ones that pay the consequences for the actions made by the companies that use agrochemicals. We should be careful with what food we buy to prevent any disease.
